Description of locations

The environments encompassed by EN 61000-6-3 are residential, commercial and light-industrial locations, both indoor and outdoor. The following list, although not comprehensive, gives an indication of locations which are included:

bulletresidential properties, e.g. houses, apartments, etc.;
bulletretail outlets, e.g. shops, supermarkets, etc.;
bulletbusiness premises, e.g. offices, banks, etc.;
bulletareas of public entertainment, e.g. cinemas, public bars, dance halls, etc.;
bulletoutdoor locations, e.g. petrol stations, car parks, amusement and sports centers, etc.;
bulletlight-industrial locations, e.g. workshops, laboratories, service centers, etc.

Locations which are characterized by being supplied directly at low voltage from the public mains are considered to be residential, commercial or light industrial.

The environments encompassed by EN 61000-6-4 are industrial locations which are characterized by the existence of one or more of the following conditions:

bulletindustrial, scientific and medical (ISM) apparatus are present;
bulletheavy inductive or capacitive loads are frequently switched;
bulletcurrents and associated magnetic fields are high.

These are the major contributors to the industrial electromagnetic environment and as such distinguish the industrial from other environments.
